Experience and qualifications: Marlena matriculated from the Hoërskool Oos-Moot and started her career in the paramedical field as a radiographer. After working only six months in private practice, she was fortunate to pursue another passion for education, training and development when being appointed as a lecturer to launch the National Qualification in Diagnostic Radiography at the then Technikon Pretoria (now Tshwane University of Technology) and in conjunction with private radiological practices for  students’ practical training.

After the birth of her three sons, she spent several years at home while also furthering her studies through UNISA. Marlena completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Tertiary Education (Cum Laude) and research-based master’s in Education (Curriculum Studies). She then worked as an Instructional Designer at UNISA (formerly Technikon Southern Africa) for more than five years. During these years she completed her doctoral studies in the Psychology of Education, focusing on the principles for whole brain learning and whole person development in distance education, at the University of Johannesburg (formerly the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU)). During her years of employment at UJ, she completed all first-year modules of the master’s degree in Leadership in Performance and Change.

In August 2000 she was appointed as Director (Finance and Technology) in the Centre for Distance Education at University of Johannesburg (UJ).  During her twelve years at UJ, she also fulfilled Director roles in the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Assessment as well as the Centre for Technology-Assisted Learning, leading the university-wide implementation of e-learning in a blended learning environment on four campuses of the merged institution.

Private Higher Education: After more than 25 years living and working in public higher education, she was appointed in August 2012 as Dean of Faculties at CTI Education Group – a private higher education institution that is now fully owned by Pearson. During these years she was among other things actively involved in the roll-out and distribution of computer tablets, training and development of lecturers and students and the development of best practices for blended learning to all students at CTI – distributed over 12 campuses in South Africa.

She is a co-author of two books (one with Dr Kobus Neethling on Creativity Coaching and one on 12 Lenses for successful implementation of technology-enhanced learning in higher education, together with Prof Izak Broere). She read numerous papers, focusing on different aspects of successful implementation of e- and mobile learning initiatives, at more than 65 national and international conferences. She has widely published in national and international accredited journals, mainly on research topics related to teaching, learning and assessment in distance education, e- and mobile learning and towards the implementation of best technology-enhanced learning practices.

She is also a certified Lifestyle Educator and successfully completed a counselling course.

New beginnings: She resigned from CTI Education Group in June 2015 to start her own business, MindUnique Education Pty (Ltd). She wants to further live her dream and passion to integrate neuro-education and -leadership research and principles while developing and training people with the ultimate goal to inspire and achieve techno-life balance while discovering and optimising their full potential in our digital-immersed world of today and into the future!

She is a firm believer that people are wonderfully created with so much untapped potential and therefore wants to engage with them in different areas of their life to optimise their full potential. Together they can co-create synergies and inspire techno-life balance while optimising opportunities and addressing challenges to enable flourishing and joyful living whether they are @ home, @ school or @work.
